Paper winders were used to roll up the tape as the stock ticker spewed it out. This not only kept the floor clean, but also allowed the tape to scroll across the broker's desk and made for easy storage of old tape reels for future reference.

Rewinders were not originally invented for ticker tape machines. They were designed to be used with pen registers, fire alarms, and other telegraphic printers. But they proved to be ideal with tickers, so when ordering, a customer would specify the paper width of whatever type of machine they had and the appropriate sized spool would be attached to their winder.

This rewinder was fitted for super-thin 1/4" tape.
